Pit Bulls demand owners that not only understand the challenges of the breed but owners committed to negotiating these challenges on a daily basis.
Pit Bulls offer wonderful companionship, are amazingly athletic, and have a terrific sense of humor. That said: We must never forget that pit bulls were bred to fight other dogs. Owners must understand their fighting heritage because it's critical to their success. Dog aggression is common and as with any trait, there are varying degrees. Dog aggression is not equivalent to and does not necessarily translate into human aggression. Aggression towards humans is very uncharacteristic of the breed. Pit Bull Project recommends any human aggressive dog--pit bull or otherwise--be humanely euthanized.
We encourage you to do as much reading as you can. There are lots of educational online resources: PIT BULL RESCUE CENTRAL, BADRAP, and Diane Jessup's WORKING PIT BULL.
Because the media and the public thrive of sensationalized pit bull narratives, it's imperative owners become breed advocates and model responsible ownership practices in their communities.
Are you responsible? Read Pit Bull Rescue Central's article on PIT BULLS AND DOG PARKS.
